• Water Project Construction Program—Project Data
Non-Reimbursable Investment
Applicant: David Clow, USGS
Project Name: Changes in the timing of snowmelt onset in the Colorado Rocky Mountains
Project Type: Research
County: Multiple
Drainage Basin: Headwaters of all major river basins
Water Source: N/A
Total Study Cost: $ 114,000
Funding Sources: Construction Fund, USGS Matching Funds, Denver Water, Southeastern
Colorado Water Conservancy District, Colorado Springs Utilities, and the Colorado River
Water Conservation District
Type of Applicant: Government Median Household Income: N/A
• CWCB Investment: 40,000
Background:
The USGS, Colorado Water Science Center would like to conduct and publish a detailed
analysis of snowpack melt timing, streamflow runoff timing, and trends in monthly air
temperature and precipitation in high-elevation areas in Colorado. The objective is to
document recent trends in snowmelt and runoff timing, and to quantify how those parameters
are affected by changing climate. Results will be used to estimate potential changes in runoff
amount and timing under a variety of climate change scenarios to understand possible
implications to water resources in Colorado including changes in water use, reservoir
operations, timing and magnitude of snowmelt flooding, drought response, and availability of
flow at certain times to meet instream flow rights.
410
