National Park Service — Great Sand Dunes Watershed Water Quality:
Annually, the CMC NRM conducts a watershed scale water quality investigation
for the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The information is compiled into their
annual water quality inventory reports. NRM has also conducted migratory bird
species inventories for the Blanca Wetlands Wildlife Preserve.
LCOSI Archaeological Inventory: NRM students performed an archeological
survey for the Lake County Open Space Initiative. The Hayden Meadows area,
once a habitat for Ute Indians was surveyed to determine preservation status
before the deciding the final location of the proposed reservoir.
LCOSI Wetlands Inventory: NRM is conducting a transect survey of the LCOSI
property to identify the lateral width of riparian corridor wetlands, and their plant
and soils composition. This service is being provided through a paid scholarship
program through the NRM.
OU 3 — Harrison Slag Property— Property Transaction: The NRM is
completing an ASTM Phase I protocol compliant environmental site assessment
of the historic slag waste property. This process is being completed as part of
the property transaction requirements from the Union Pacific Railroad to be
transferred to the City of Leadville. Property transaction efforts have required that
the Phase I ESA be completed as well as a site soil (surface and subsurface)
characterization be completed. The site soils study involved the design and
completion of a surface and subsurface soil-sampling program involving the
completion of 15 on-site trenches. Trenches were characterized for soil profile
and samples were collected for total metals analysis. Results of the site soils
study and ESA efforts were folded into a Site Work Plan providing mitigation
options. This enables the City of Leadville to decide the next best economic use
and development of the property.
OU 3 — Poverty Flats Stormwater Plan: The NRM was responsible for
collecting property stormwater feature information in order to identify the
concerning factors that create stormwater issues. This property provides
significant sheet flow that inundates adjacent thoroughfares within the City of
Leadville. Once the features were inventoried and sized, NRM worked in
coordination-with Frontier Environmental Services to design the needed
enhancements to help control the stormwater issues. This project received
further funding and is now continuing into the private development area of West
Park within the City of Leadville.
Colorado Gulch Fate and Transport Assessment: The NRM successfully
procured funding through the EPA Consolidated Funding process. The students
wrote the proposal and successfully received the entire amount of request funds
that will serve the purpose of supporting labor and other direct costs for the study
of contaminant loading to the Colorado Gulch tributary of the Lake Fork. The
baseline fall water quality conditions studies were completed in summer 2002, to
