provided the necessary documentation and interpretation as required by the
Colorado State Historical Preservation Organization.
Environmental Protection Agency/Cultural Resources: NRM was responsible
for writing a professional report assessing the cultural resources within a
proposed project area. Previously surveyed historical resources were identified
and the project was created to have no adverse effect to these resources. The
report was sent to the State Historic Preservation Officer for their approval of the
project.
USGS Salt Trace of Lake Fork: NRM was tasked to provide field support for the
USGS evaluation of metals equilibrium within the Lake Fork Watershed.
Students were responsible for flow measurements, sample collection, and
sample processing in support of the effort.
US EPA and USFWS Phase I and II Irrigated Meadows Forage Study. NRM
was responsible for the collection of randomly identified soils samples throughout
the irrigated meadows area of the 11-mile reach. This effort was being
conducted to determine the contamination fate and transport within irrigated
meadows. It was hypothesized that irrigated waters may have been
contaminated from the historic mining practices. The objectives of the study
were to identify contaminated areas and then design a second phase
investigation to determine impacts of the contamination to plant and soil
invertebrates. NRM collected the 124 soil samples that served the purpose of
the Phase I effort. NRM completed the process of interpreting the findings to
assist in design of the second Phase, which was implemented summer of 2002.
NRM assisted in the isolation, identification, collection, and processing of
herbaceous life samples at selected sites within the 11-mile reach. NRM will
remain a part of this ongoing study.
Environmental Protection Agency/ Access Agreements: NRM delineated the
footprint of the Superfund Site. The remediation plan investigated properties
within the impacted area and comprised a list of potentially responsible parties
(PRP's) and property owners. A mass mailing sent out to the PRP's and property
owners by the EPA discussed the type of potential impact the work plan may
have on the individual properties. NRM waited upon responses before beginning
remediation work efforts.
OU 6 Groundwater Evaluation: determine the efficacy of OU 6 water routing
to the LMDT: The NRM has been tasked by the EPA to gather all existing
groundwater information in order to be able to `type' the water and determine its
pathways of travel. This information gathering takes the form of 1) dye trace
studies, 2) natural potential studies of the LMDT, and 3) existing data
interpretation from previous studies. A study completed in 1997 describing the
`rising groundwater levels' within the Superfund Site district will ultimately be up-
dated with this newly gathered information. The information is to be used to
