<br /> I Pawnee Creek drains an area of 645 square miles in Logan County and is tributary to the South Platte
<br /> River southwest of the City of Sterling. The overflows from floods on Pawnee Creek flooded the
<br /> community in 1935, 1965, and 1997. The city's business sector was completely inundated during the July
<br /> I 30-31, 1997 flood event. Approximately 1,400 homes and the entire business district in the southern half
<br /> of the community are in the 100-year floodplain from Pawnee Creek overflows. ICON Engineering, Inc.
<br /> of Denver completed a reconnaissance level study in June 1997. The proposed project consists of levees,
<br /> improved channel hydraulic conveyance systems, bridge modifications, and floodwalls designed to
<br /> I provide 100-year flood protection. The project plan is under review to evaluate the flood characteristics
<br /> from a flood of the same magnitude as the 1997 flood. The total cost of the project is estimated at
<br /> $4,040,000. Funding sources include the city's capital improvement fund ($750,000), a FEMA hazard
<br /> 1 mitigation grant ($1,165,000), Logan County in kind services ($150,000), the Union Pacific Railroad
<br /> ($375,000), Colorado Department of Transportation ($550,000), CWCB Construction Fund in 1998
<br /> ($550,000), and CWCB Construction Fund in 1999 if needed($500,000).
