I
have evaluated the potential for storage and recharge on the 80 acre parcel.
The 80 acre parcel is located in a natural unnamed drainage tributary to the South Platte River
west of Platteville. The site has an existing small unnamed pond, filled via a drainage slew that
runs through the center of the 80 acres. Both ditch companies have proposed a storage and
recharge project be constructed on the 80 acres.
Figure 1 shows the maximum storage reservoir that could be built on the parcel without
inundating land outside of the 80 acre parcel. The size of the storage reservoir is 20 acres of free
water surface with an estimated capacity of 119 acre-feet. Storage in the reservoir is limited to
water stored above the natural groundwater level, which is approximately 7 feet below the
existing land surface. The reservoir would be filled via a new ditch and diversion structure from
the Farmers Independent Ditch as shown on Figure 1. The dam would be constructed to a
maximum toe to crest height of 10 feet,to avoid being classified as a jurisdictional reservoir by
the State Engineer (the storage and water surface is also less then the 40 acres or 100 acre-feet
jurisdictional threshold). To avoid exposure of alluvial groundwater, the 1330 foot earthen dam
material will be excavated from the existing side slope on the east side of the property as shown
Water Rights • Hydrology • Hydraulics • Water Quality
F:\Old Clients\FIDCO\Eckhardt Prelim Evaluation Letter.doc
1
