RECO1,41r1ENDATIONS
It is recommended that:
1. A comprehensive program for water pollution control in the South
Platte River Basin be formulated by the State water pollution con-
trol agencies of Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming.
2. The State legislatures of Colorado and Nebraska enact comprehensive
water pollution control legislation, and that all Basin States
support their water pollution control agencies with adequate funds
to permit effective operation.
3. Sewage and industrial waste treatment as recommended in table 1
be provided by the appropriate municipality or industry. Toxic
materials should be virtually eliminated from waste discharges.
4. Construction and operating agencies cooperating in development of
water and land resources of the South Platte River Basin consider
the sanitation, public health and welfare functions of streams in
addition to other legitimate water uses.
5. Public water supplies secured from surface waters, those from
shallow ground sources, and all supplies showing coliform con-
tamination in excess of acceptable drinking water standards, be
chlorinated in addition to other necessary treatment.
6. Caution be exercised in the use of sewage - polluted waters for
irrigating low growing vegetable and root crops which may be
consumed raw. Effective chlorination of sewage treatment plant
effluents to control pathogenic organisms is recommended.
7. Consideration be given to methods for reducing silt and related
pollution which affects water treatment plant operation and main-
tenance, destroys fisheries, and reduces other recreational uses.
8. Training of waste treatment plant operators be intensified to
insure efficient utilization of treatment works.
7
