SECTIONTHREE Background Information
3-1
3. Section 3 THREE Background Information
3.1 PROJECT HISTORY
The project history is documented in “The San Luis Valley Historian - Reservoirs of the
San Luis Valley, Volume XXXVIII Number 2, 2006”. A copy of this document is presented
under Appendix C. This feasibility study addresses the repairs to the Continental Dam as
discussed in the following sections.
Continental Reservoir, in Hinsdale County, Colorado, is impounded by an embankment
dam along its northeast side. The dam and reservoir are owned and operated by SMRC. The
dam is located approximately 8 miles southeast of the town of Lake City, Colorado, as shown on
Figure 3.1. The reservoir is primarily fed by North Clear Creek and direct runoff. The SEO
classifies the main dam as a large, high-hazard structure.
The main dam is an earthen structure, approximately 310 feet long and 92 feet high,
based on the Dam Safety Engineer’s Inspection Report from June 4, 2009, available drawings,
and reservoir storage data. The existing spillway consists of a 140-foot long, side channel
spillway with a lined discharge chute and dissipation basin. The upstream slope of the main dam
varies from 2.5H:1V to 4H:1V, and the downstream slope is approximately 2H:1V.
Initially designed in 1911, the dam was redesigned and constructed between May, 1925
and December, 1928. The dam and reservoir are owned and operated by the SMRC, of Monte
Vista, Colorado.

Figure 3.1: Location Map
