C;. rr"' Rio Grande Water Conservation District
1 10900 Highway 160 East • Alamosa, Colorado 81101
Phone: (719) 589-6301 • Fax: (719) 589-4331
Protecting & Conserving San Luis Valley Water
rva .\c;c'
November 3, 2009
RE: Colorado Water Conservation Board Grant #C150093 final report
The Rio Grande Water Conservation District (District) applied for and received a grant
for $200,000 to assist the Bureau of Reclamation in the rehabilitation and re-drill of
existing Closed Basin wells to more efficiently salvage groundwater to be used to help
meet the commitments of the Rio Grande Compact for the State of Colorado. The
money was used to purchase supplies that were needed to re-drill wells that were not
properly functioning and to rehabilitate wells that were not running efficiently.
The grant was expended between August 1, 2002, and June 30, 2006. By the end of
the contract, the Bureau of Reclamation was able to re-drill 30 wells with supplies and
parts purchased by the District with money from the CWCB grant and the money the
Bureau was able to find in their budget to match the grant funds. The total amount
spent from the grant was $199,869.26. All invoices for supplies were sent in with
request for reimbursement from the District to provide documentation of supplies that
were being purchased for the wells.
The Bureau continues to work on their re-drill project for wells that are not producing
salvage water due to bio-fouling from iron bacteria. They have successfully re-drilled 52
wells as of October 31, 2009. The project is still on-going and is now fully funded by the
federal budget.
