a conveyor belt, and a forty -yard dump truck. On average 3,000
cu. yds. are excavated from the site per year. The site has been
in operation since 1985.
Unique to their operation however is the particular
awareness and concern they have expressed for minimizing the
negative impacts of the operation. Together with the landowner
they have actively cooperated in the construction of rock lined
channels, step structures, check dams, and retention ponds. They
have also begun experimenting with different methods of
revegetation even though excavation is still occurring. These
include planting of willow sprigs in very moist areas, and
smoothing, disking, and seeding using a commercial grass mixture
recommended by the Soil Conservation Service in the dryer areas.
and other denuded areas with willows and sedges. The landowner
hopes to eventually introduce beaver in an effort to augment long
term pond management.
This site and the actions implemented there could be
considered a model of what landowners and operators can do, or at
least should be expected to do, to minimize impacts during the
extraction process.
SACRAMENTO FEN
0 Appendix B (iv)
Eventual plans call
for the area
to be reclaimed by grading cut
banks, creating two
small ponds,
and revegetating pond margins
and other denuded areas with willows and sedges.
