on land in the Gunnison National Forest near Grand Mesa. These
were the only sites found to be operating on federal or state
lands. They are operated (under Forest Service permits) by a
number of individuals from the Grand Junction area.
A distinction about what constitutes the size of an
operation is needed. Three methods are available for determining
operation size: 1) the area of the entire peatland; 2) that
portion of the peatland which has been, and will be excavated;
or, 3) the portion of the peatland that is actively being
excavated. In this discussion all operation sizes refer to the
active site (unless otherwise specified).
In general, the active excavation occupies less than ten
acres. In some instances the active site is only one or two
40 acres. However, there are a few sites in the South Park area
that in their entirety encompass hundreds of acres. In those
cases the site comprises land that was previously excavated but
has not yet been reclaimed.
Appendix B lists and describes each of the sites
specifically. The sites described are those where active or
recent excavation is or has taken place. The list may not
include all present and past sites, but should be considered a
best representation of all active sites based on the information
made available to this study.
40 23
