QUARTERLY REPORT <br />APRIL, MAY AND JUNE 1993 <br />WETLAND PROTECTION PROGRAM GRANT CD998116 -01 -0 <br />Wetlands booklet and slide show <br />Booklet. Draft copy was circulated to members of the Wetlands <br />Resource Group; comments were received; and suggested changes <br />discussed with consultant Dr. David Cooper. A "final" version <br />incorporating his responses will be circulated to selected members <br />of the group on July 19. Illustrations for the booklet were <br />assigned, and photos have been collected. Design and production <br />will begin at the same time. Target publication date: September 7, <br />1993. <br />Slide show. Upon discussion among John Peters of the EPA, Susan <br />Foster of Thorne Ecological Institute and Kate Jones of the <br />colorado Department of Natural Resources, it was decided that by <br />adjusting dollars within the existing grant, a video could be <br />produced to replace the slide show that was originally proposed. <br />the appropriate paperwork has been submitted to EPA to make these <br />funding changes. Foster and Jones will work with a video firm to <br />produce a 10 -15 minute video on Colorado wetlands. The video will <br />be produced in two versions: One version will be for the general <br />public; the second will include documentation of the field <br />workshops, and will be used to discuss wetlands issues with the <br />Colorado Legislature. <br />Wetlands resource group <br />The group met on March 9 and May 4, 1993, at the Department of <br />Natural Resources. The group has provided important feedback and <br />guidance on the booklet and workshops. Next scheduled meeting: <br />July 13, 1993, 1:30 -3:30 p.m., 1313 Sherman, Room 719. <br />Wetlands field workshops <br />Planning and marketing was completed for four field workshops, in <br />Steamboat Springs, Fort Morgan, Breckenridge and Gunnison. <br />Marketing efforts included dissemination of more than 13,000 <br />flyers, as well as notices in a number of special- and general - <br />interest publications. Response was overwhelming, and all workshops <br />were filled within a few weeks. <br />A <br />Three of the workshops were held within this quarter: <br />Steamboat Springs, June 13 1993. Twenty -eight participants <br />visited a wet meadow near Stagecoach Reservoir, as well as a <br />riparian area on the Yampa and a cottonwood grove on Elk <br />Creek. Field discussions focused on the interplay of soil <br />types, hydrology and vegetation in defining wetland <br />conditions; functions of riparian areas; and the function of <br />river floodplain dynamics in the regeneration of cottonwoods. <br />At the end of the day, a hour -long meeting was held to <br />discuss wetlands and riparian functions. <br />
