QUARTERLY REPORT
APRIL, MAY AND JUNE 1993
WETLAND PROTECTION PROGRAM GRANT CD998116 -01 -0
Wetlands booklet and slide show
Booklet. Draft copy was circulated to members of the Wetlands
Resource Group; comments were received; and suggested changes
discussed with consultant Dr. David Cooper. A "final" version
incorporating his responses will be circulated to selected members
of the group on July 19. Illustrations for the booklet were
assigned, and photos have been collected. Design and production
will begin at the same time. Target publication date: September 7,
1993.
Slide show. Upon discussion among John Peters of the EPA, Susan
Foster of Thorne Ecological Institute and Kate Jones of the
colorado Department of Natural Resources, it was decided that by
adjusting dollars within the existing grant, a video could be
produced to replace the slide show that was originally proposed.
the appropriate paperwork has been submitted to EPA to make these
funding changes. Foster and Jones will work with a video firm to
produce a 10 -15 minute video on Colorado wetlands. The video will
be produced in two versions: One version will be for the general
public; the second will include documentation of the field
workshops, and will be used to discuss wetlands issues with the
Colorado Legislature.
Wetlands resource group
The group met on March 9 and May 4, 1993, at the Department of
Natural Resources. The group has provided important feedback and
guidance on the booklet and workshops. Next scheduled meeting:
July 13, 1993, 1:30 -3:30 p.m., 1313 Sherman, Room 719.
Wetlands field workshops
Planning and marketing was completed for four field workshops, in
Steamboat Springs, Fort Morgan, Breckenridge and Gunnison.
Marketing efforts included dissemination of more than 13,000
flyers, as well as notices in a number of special- and general -
interest publications. Response was overwhelming, and all workshops
were filled within a few weeks.
A
Three of the workshops were held within this quarter:
Steamboat Springs, June 13 1993. Twenty -eight participants
visited a wet meadow near Stagecoach Reservoir, as well as a
riparian area on the Yampa and a cottonwood grove on Elk
Creek. Field discussions focused on the interplay of soil
types, hydrology and vegetation in defining wetland
conditions; functions of riparian areas; and the function of
river floodplain dynamics in the regeneration of cottonwoods.
At the end of the day, a hour -long meeting was held to
discuss wetlands and riparian functions.
