Feasibility Study
Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company
May Pipe Line Project
Introduction
The Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company(MVIC) is located in Montezuma County,
operates for the benefit of the shareholders by providing direct flow irrigation water. The
company diverts from the Dolores River, just west of the Town of Dolores Colorado, and
water deliveries are made through the Company's ditches and the McPhee Project to our
service area.
The May Lateral is an open ditch approximately 5 miles long(Figure 1). This canal
carries approximately 18 cfs and delivers water to approximately 105 shareholders. This
canal has severe leaks and requires on going maintenance. Estimated loss from this canal
is between 3-7 cfs per day.
MVIC wants to construct a pipeline and abandon the open ditch in order to improve the
delivery of water for the beneficial application and use by our shareholders.
Project Participant
MVIC is a non-profit corporation registered in the State of Colorado (501c)-12. There are
1358 shareholders and 33,284 shares of stock. MVIC has the power to set annual
assessments to be paid by the shareholders, the power to cut off water deliveries to
shareholders that fail to pay their assessments. MVIC articles of incorporation and by-
laws are included in Appendix A.
Project Service Area, and Governmental shareholders
MVIC provides irrigation water to approximately 46,000 acres within our service area in
Montezuma County. The service area for MVIC is located entirely within Montezuma
County located in southwest Colorado (Figure 2). A map of the MVIC canal system is
shown in(Figure3). Photos of the existing May Lateral are shown in(Figure 4). (MVIC)
has a total of 1336 shareholders with a total of 33,284 shares of stock. The Dolores Water
Conservancy District owns 170 shares representing 0.5 %of the total shares. The City of
Cortez owns 177 shares representing 0.5% of the total shares.
Water Rights / MVIC service area / Share holders
The sources of water for the Company are direct flow water rights out of the Dolores
River. The water rights diverted at the MVIC head gate consist of 9 rights with dates of
appropriation ranging from 1863 to 1905 and totaling 795 cfs. MVIC owns all of these
rights totaling 795 cfs. Records of the State Engineer's Office indicate that total average
annual diversions are 128,000 acre-feet,based on record years 1991 through 2001 and
5
