Animas -La Plata Project
Feb 13, 2013 Draft Transfer Inspection Report
DURANGO PUMPING PLANT
A. General Description
The primary purpose of the Durango Pumping Plant is to pump water from the Animas River into
Lake Nighthorse. The Durango Pumping Plant draws water from the Animas River through an
intake /fish screen structure and pumps the water approximately 523 feet in elevation through
the Ridges Basin Inlet Conduit to the off - stream storage reservoir, Lake Nighthorse, created by
the Ridges Basin Dam.
The principal features of the Durango Pumping Plant include all auxiliary mechanical and
electrical equipment and systems, including the following:
• Pumps, motors, and valves.
• Intake /fish screen structure with fish bypass pipeline, including all auxiliary mechanical
and electrical equipment and systems required.
• Intake structure control building.
• Intake and discharge manifolds.
• A single spherical steel air chamber for the Ridges Basin Inlet Conduit.
• A single cylindrical air chamber for the City of Durango water supply pipeline and
associated manifolds.
• Flowmeter structures
B. Durango Pumping Plant Intake Structure
The intake structure consists of concrete structures; intake bulkhead gates, trashracks, crest
gates, and forebay; the fish bypass pipe, gate, and outfall structure; the fish screen and cleaning
system; differential water level measuring devices; an 84" diameter pump intake pipe; and the
intake structure control building, with associated controls and equipment.
1. Intake Structure and Forebay
Trashracks are installed in slots provided at the entrance to the intake structure. Trash
buildup on the trashracks has required continual removal during certain periods of pumping
and river flows. Reclamation believes that trash accumulation, and associated maintenance
costs, may be reduced by the scheduled modifications to the crest gates.
Three bulkhead gates were designed for isolation of the intake forebay from the river, and
for inspection and maintenance of all downstream equipment. The bulkheads are currently
stored at the intake.
TRANSFER ISSUE
STIPULATION
There is no storage for the
Reclamation will construct an equipment storage building on the
bulkhead gates
DPP site, with adequate room to store the bulkheads.
Reclamation will enhance the existing air blast system with
Excessive sediment
additional lines to minimize silt deposition in front of the fish
accumulates in the intake
screen sweep. Reclamation will also work with the Association to
forebay
identify operational modifications to minimize the amount of
sediment accumulation.
Transferred Works Inspection 12 Animas -La Plata Project
