Centennial is conducting research that
involves installing and operating a point of source satellite wastewater treatment system to produce non-
potable irrigation water.
The demonstration project will characterize the system's cost effectiveness, water savings, technical
feasibility and scalability. The project also will establish the system's ability to receive regulatory
approval.
The innovative treatment process, developed by Great Circle Water of California, extracts wastewater
from an existing sanitary sewer and, through non-biological separation and disinfection steps, improves
the water quality in a closed-loop, fail-safe recycling unit generating a consistent, safe and reliable non-
potable source of irrigation water.
Essentially all current reuse systems, which have been rapidly expanding in recent years, use the formula
of reusing wastewater by way of pumping and piping systems relatively near the centralized wastewater
treatment plan. This demonstration project seeks to dramatically expand the locations where cost-
effective reuse can be achieved by establishing that these reliable safe treatment units can be located at
any "point of use" where there is a wastewater service line nearby. This potentially can expand the
locations for wastewater reuse to all golf courses, parks, greenbelts and possibly schools. The vision is
that all golf courses, soccer fields (and much more)would one day use reclaimed wastewater, irrespective
of plentiful or drought conditions.
Central to this project is the importance of the satellite treatment technology to other reuse applications in
Colorado and throughout the arid West. The project would reclaim reliable reusable wastewater return
flows that are currently being"lost"downstream, essentially developing new water supplies.
The $50,000 grant funds from CWCB will contribute substantially to the completion of the pilot
demonstration project. Centennial thanks the CWCB for its generous support. .
Project Description
The project involves the design and construction of the satellite wastewater treatment system for
operation in the Highlands Ranch area. The project will include the following activities:
• Design
• Regulatory Approval
