Habitat Use
Radio - tagged shovelnose sturgeon were most frequently found over sand substrates with
some instances of fish using a mixture of sand and gravel. Depths used by shovelnose sturgeon
ranged from 0.27 m to 2.50 m in 2000 with a mean of 0.85 m. In 2001, depth use ranged from
0.32 m to 3.20 m with a mean of 0.92 m. Percent use of depth was greatest between 0.31 and
1.22 m for both years (Figure 1.2).
Mean column velocity use ranged from 0.09 to 0.94 m/s in 2000 with a mean of 0.58 m/s.
In 2001, mean column velocity use ranged from 0.15 to 1.16 m/s with a mean of 0.61 m/s.
Percent use of mean column velocity was greatest between 0.41 to 0.80 m/s for both years
(Figure 1.3). Bottom current velocity ranged from -0.15 to 0.62 m/s in 2000 with a mean of 0.34
m/s. In 2001, bottom current velocity use ranged from -0.12 to 0.91 m/s with a mean of 0.37 m/s.
Percent use of bottom current velocity was greatest between 0.21 and 0.60 m/s for both years
(Figure 1.4).
The pallid sturgeon (Fish 62 1) was located 10 times from May 4, 2001 to June 7, 2001.
This fish was observed in water depths averaging 1.17 m (range 0.57 -1.80 m). Mean column
velocities used by the pallid sturgeon ranged from 0.62 to 1.28 m/s with a mean of 0.86 m/s.
Bottom current velocity use ranged from 0.43 to 0.84 m/s with a mean of 0.66 m/s. This fish was
always located over sand substrates.
On average, measures of depth (P = 0.7682), mean column velocity (P = 0.1925), and
bottom velocity (P = 0.3149) used by shovelnose sturgeon did not differ between 2000 and 2001
(Tables 3 -4).
