The FWS (Missouri River B.O.) states that pallid sturgeon were
still fairly common in the Missouri in 1967.
"Correspondence and notes of researchers suggest, that the pallid sturgeon was still
fairly common in many parts of the Mississippi and Missouri River systems as late as
1967 (Keenlyne 1989). The literature indicates that declines in populations have
occurred coincidental with development of the Missouri and Mississippi River systems
for flood control and navigation (Deacon et al. 1979, Keenlyne 1989). "
Since then, over a span of 33 years, while the species has gone
from being fairly common to rare throughout its range, the
average monthly Platte River discharge at Louisville during
March, April, May, and June increased. In fact, over the last 60
years, since 1941 when Lake McConaughy was filled, the flows
in the lower Platte have been stable to increasing.
