Fish and Wildlife
14
Reclamation's reservoirs are managed to
provide wildlife enhancement by restoring
or minimizing disruption of habitat. The
bald eagle, an endangered species, is a
common winter resident in the North Platte
River Basin.
Two national wildlife refuges were created
as a result of North Platte River Basin
Reclamation Projects. The Pathfinder
National Wildlife Refuge, covering the
Sweetwater arm and the headwaters of the
reservoir near "Miracle Mile," is a nesting
area for Canada geese. Waterfowl and
migratory birds pass through the refuge on
their north -south flights. Large game is
abundant around Pathfinder Reservoir and
provides excellent hunting for pronghorn
antelope and mule deer. Sage grouse, an
upland game species, is also common
around Pathfinder. Pathfinder supports
cold -water fish such as rainbow, brown,
and cutthroat trout.
The North Platte National Wildlife Refuge
is located around the off - stream reservoirs
northeast of Scottsbluff. Migratory
waterfowl use this area extensively in the
fall and early winter. To protect wildlife, this
L
refuge is closed to all recreational activity
between October 1 and January 15.
Seminoe Reservoir harbors many golden
eagles. Some nests can be seen by boat
on the southern arm of the reservoir.
Bighorn sheep and elk have been
introduced near the area and winter in the
Morgan Creek Winter Range. Pronghorn
antelope also abound at Seminoe.
The area around Guernsey and Glendo
Reservoirs is a nesting area for large
numbers of great blue herons and
double- crested cormorants. White
pelicans are often seen throughout the mild
seasons at these reservoirs. These
species also can be seen on the North
Platte Wildlife Refuge at Lake Alice and
Lake Minatare. Glendo supports a
moderate mule deer population during the
winter. Warm-water fish, primarily walleye,
yellow perch, and catfish, inhabit Glendo
Reservoir.
C
6
