Rood Control
Controlling floods was not a major
consideration when the first Reclamation
projects were built. Yet, the North Platte's
system of dams has provided $35 million
worth of flood control benefits. During 1983
and 1984, major catastrophes were
averted, both in the upper and lower
reaches of the basin.
Only Glendo was built with specific
authority to control flooding. Over one -third
of its capacity is designated exclusive flood
pool storage. Major flooding was prevented
in 1983 and 1984 by careful operation of
the entire North Platte River System.
rvoir
11
