One concept for accomplishing
these objectives:
• (Increase active channel area): Remove
wooded islands in the channel to increase
channel area by approximately 50 %.
• (Maintain the channel area): Use EA releases
to achieve annual peak flows of 6,000 -8,000 cfs.
• (Offset erosion by clear water): Move
approximately 500 tons of river sand per day
(about 70 ac -ft /year) from islands into the J -2
return channel to offset ongoing erosion.
daptive Management Approach
Phase 1
• Undertake some island removal for the
four narrowest bridge segments
(flexibility on location for first phase.)
• Begin annual EA pulse flows to clear
newly established vegetation.
• Begin sediment augmentation at J -2.
• Monitor effectiveness and other impacts.
• Evaluate effectiveness during critical
hydrologic events (e.g., dry periods), and
alter activities based on results (ARM).
33
