Channel degradation is now a
One -Way process:
• Channel widening events (large peak flows and
sediment movement) are now rare.
• When vegetation is established now, it is rarely
removed.
• The erosive effect of clear water return is
constant.
• Dry periods lead to nearly irreversible channel
narrowing through vegetation encroachment.
Our Conclusions on Trends in
River Form:
• We see consistent evidence from field
data that there is an ongoing trend in
the habitat reach toward a narrower,
more vegetated, coarser, deeper
channel.
• This trend is progressing downstream.
• Habitat loss is continuing.
16
