C,1/26/01 18:25 FAX 303 445 6331 PLATTE RIVER EIS OFFICE 16003
1/26/01
To: Outreach Committee
From: Curt Brown, Manager, Platte River EIS Office
Mark Butler, FWS Platte River Coordinator
Subject: Press Release for the Channel Stability "White Paper"
The purpose of this email is to inform you of two actions we will be taking next week.
I. Next week, we will be sending out to the States and Governance Committee via express mail
the "white paper" that Reclamation has been preparing on the channel stability issues. This is
provided as-part of our obligation under Extension Milestone C -1, due January 31, 2001. Other
materials are also being provided to the states soon, particularly the "SED -VEG" computer
model and documentation.
to issues press release announcing the release of the white paper. Attached ( 41) is a
press release, provided to You for your information.
2. Recently, at the request of the Nebraska Governor's Advisory Committee on the Platte River
Cooperative Agreement, we provided that group with a briefing on the channel stability issues.
We did not provide information to the press. However, subsequently, some information from
that briefing was passed along in good faith at other meetings and was picked up by the press.
This partial information formed the basis a local newspaper article and editorial (attached) by the
Kearney Hub, which we feel did not represent the facts or the intent of our efforts. .
Therefore, we have prepared an "Op -Ed" piece to be published in the Kearney Hub, as a
clarification of the facts regarding the channel stability issue. Attached is a DRAFT of that piece
( #2), as well as a copy of the editorial, in case you have not seen it.
This action is not being released through the Outreach Committee because it would be
inappropriate to have this report represented as a product of the Governance Committee. Further,
we are responding to articles and editorials that have directly questioned the work of the
Department. Therefore, we believe it is appropriate for the Department to respond directly.
see any substantial err ese items spond to Curt Brown or Mark
at (303 ) 4-4-5--2T9-6 by 10 a.m. MST Tuesday, January 30.
N
