Occurrence of pallid sturgeon captures in fishery surveys of the upper Missouri River
main stem reservoirs has sharply declined since the early 1950's. Since 1980, the most
frequent reports of occurrence have been from the Missouri River between the Maris
River and Fort Peck Reservoir; between Fort Peck Dam and Lake Sakakawea, within the
lower 70 miles of the Yellowstone River to downstream of Fallon, Montana; in the
headwaters of Lake Sharpe; and from the Missouri and Platte rivers near Plattsmouth,
Nebraska (Krentz 2000).
Fifty -one percent of the known historic range of pallid sturgeon has been channelized,
another 28 percent has been impounded, and the remaining 21 percent has been affected
by related modifications in flow regimes (Keenlyne 1989 in Duffy et al. 1996 and Peters
et al. 2001; FWS 1989 in NatureServe Explorer 2001).
Data/Methods
Baseline information on pallid sturgeon occurrence in the Platte River is derived from
records maintained by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC), Ak -sar -ben
aquarium, near Gretna, Nebraska. Reports of pallid sturgeon captures in Nebraska are
received and verified by Ak -sar -ben aquarium staff. In addition, records of verified
captures are maintained in the Natural Heritage Program database by the NGPC, Lincoln.
Occurrence of Pallid Sturgeon in the Lower Platte River
NOTE: The information below remains primarily from the May 30, 2001 draft Baseline
Report. Conflicting numbers are found between the text, tables, draft FWS Summary
report, NGPC Heritage database, and presentations. We are in the process of obtaining
the raw data detailing exact capture locations, dates, method of verification, etc. This
information, when obtained, will be depicted here.
Draft Baseline Report — Pallid Sturgeon Section
