GLOSSARY OF TECHNICAL TERMS (Continued) <br />Chapter 1 <br />GIGAWATTHOUR (GWh) <br />A quantity of electrical energy equal to 1 million kilowatthours. <br />GREENHOUSE EFFECT <br />Warming of the earth's atmosphere attributed to an increase in carbon dioxide and <br />other gases. <br />INVERTEBRATE <br />An animal lacking a spinal column; examples include insects, shellfish, and <br />zooplankton. <br />MORPHOLOGY <br />The three- dimensional characteristics or form of a structure such as a river channel. <br />RIPARIAN <br />Vegetation adapted to moist growing conditions found along waterways and <br />shorelines. Generally adapted to occasional flooding. <br />RIVERINE <br />Wetlands and deepwater habitats within a channel that are not dominated by trees, <br />shrubs, persistent emergent vegetation, emergent mosses, or lichens. <br />SPECIES <br />A group of individual plants or animals (including species, subspecies, and <br />populations) that live in common habitat and interbreed. <br />Chapter 2 <br />CANYON LAKES <br />The lakes along the Tri- County Canal. <br />CREDITABLE CAPACITY <br />The maximum sustainable amount of power that can be produced by the projects, <br />as defined by the Mid - Continent Area Power Pool. <br />NET CONTROLLABLE CONSERVED WATER <br />The amount of "new" water resulting from conservation efforts that can be stored <br />and later utilized. <br />RECHARGE <br />The process by which water is replenished to the groundwater supply. <br />Chapter 3 <br />ACRE -FOOT <br />The volume of water required to cover one acre of land to a depth of one foot: <br />43,560 cubic feet or 325,850 gallons. <br />xvii <br />
