Taylor Tyzzer <br />First Place Category I — Colorado River of Words <br />Slate River School, Grade 2 <br />Sue Wilson Teacher <br />Crested Butte, Colorado <br />Earth Water <br />I wander to the warm pool, <br />crouch down, and watch <br />the waters come out of the cave. <br />My dad says it rushes from <br />Inside the earth and trickles <br />Into the pool. <br />I softly melt into the pool; <br />it feels like a newborn body. <br />I walk to the cave; it is dark and <br />Gloomy. <br />I sink under water and I hear <br />the sounds of my feet and <br />hands sweeping <br />swish, swish <br />on the bottom of the pool. <br />The cool arms of the wind wrap <br />Around me as I come up for air. <br />I get out of the pool and gaze at the sunlit sky. <br />The warm body of nature comforts me. <br />Raine Lamb <br />First Place Category 11 — Colorado River of Words <br />Discovery Canyon Campus, Grade 6 <br />Colorado Springs, Colorado <br />My Wilderness <br />My backyard is wild <br />With plants and animals and dreams <br />Bears come to my door <br />Reminding me <br />That I'm living by their streams <br />Deer make trails down my hills <br />Munching scrub oak leaves <br />The starry nights <br />Call to a special place in me <br />Mountain lions stalk from the cliffs <br />Scanning the world below them from their prey <br />Scrub Jays feed their babies <br />Teaching them to fly <br />Tree by tree <br />Lizards sunbathe on the rocks <br />Warming the cold blooded bodies <br />My backyard in the foothills <br />Is the wilderness <br />That I need <br />Tristan Best <br />First Place Category 111— Colorado River of Words <br />Discovery Canyon Campus, Grade 6 <br />Colorado Springs, Colorado <br />Wintertime <br />Winter comes and goes, <br />Mountain peaks topped with snow, <br />Frost on the grass, <br />Fog on the window glass, <br />Every year, <br />The world seems to stop <br />To watch the snow fall down. <br />Birds gone south, <br />Sitting by the fire, <br />Hot chocolate in your mouth, <br />The squeal of a tire, <br />Driving through the icy streets. <br />The air is frigid, <br />Seeping <br />Through the cracks <br />At midnight <br />A full moon in the sky, <br />Brightens the corners. <br />Warmer now, <br />The ice melts, <br />Dripping to the beat, <br />Of a world brought back to life. <br />Reprinted with permission from the Colorado <br />Endowment for the Humanities and the Colorado <br />Center for the Book, 2006 Student Literary Awards. <br />HEADWATERS I SUMMER 2006 <br />29 <br />
