1 1
"Building Communities Beyond the 100-Year Line"
By Robert Krehbiel, Conference Chair
Mark your calendars! CASFM's annual conference is back in Glenwood Springs at the historic Hotel Col-
orado September 27 — 29, 2006 this year. CASFM will completely take over the hotel, and everyone at the
facility will be associated with the conference. This is the 17th annual conference and should provide a perfect
opportunity to get out of town, meet new people, network with your peers, view fall colors and enjoy the last of
the warm weather in the Rocky Mountains. Our conference experience in Glenwood Springs in 2004 was very
positive, and we are excited about returning to the hotel. For those interested, the Certified Floodplain Manag-
er's exam review will begin a day earlier on September 26th. Don't miss out!
Topics at this year's conference include:
• Flood Preparedness: simulations, flood outlook, reservoir storage, updated hydrology
• Stream Restoration: bio engineering, aquatic life, monitoring, stabilization
• Stormwater Management & Erosion Control: watershed controls, innovative BMP's
• River Hydrology & Hydraulic Modeling: levee requirements, 3 -D modeling, GIS tools
• Channel Stabilization: new drop structure designs, hydraulic jumps, diversions
• Urban Stormwater Runoff & Master Planning: runoff models, detention, funding
Look for a registration mailer and email reminders in July to register for the conference, to book your room
and for more conference information. Glenwood Springs offers many activities for family members and oppor-
tunities for river rafting, biking, hiking, fishing, golfing and of course, relaxation in the Hot Springs Pool. The
Hotel Colorado has historic charm and three large conference rooms to host our conference. The Grand Ball-
room is beautiful and will provide a nice facility for our main activities and meals. The courtyard is elegant and
if the weather holds, will be a nice location for the socials with a backdrop of the fall colors. Conference partici-
pants will have opportunities to stay in unique rooms and can share larger two or three bedroom units to save
money. Inquire about the many different room options when booking your room or suite.
The conference will be bigger than ever with a record 36 technical presentations and 3 workshop opportuni-
ties. The conference will also include the same great format of keynote presentation, plenary session, and project
awards. There will be a workshop on Monitoring Stream Restoration, and the ever - popular bike field trip along
the Colorado River. We think this will be popular conference and look forward to your participation!
We hope to see you there!
It
,.
Summer 2006 13
