The Value of Applied Research
continued from page 1
engineers and scientists have had the privilege of working with some of the finest
minds in the nation. The bonds that have been formed transcend specific areas of
study. Together, these activities create a fabric of interrelated research activities
designed to serve the best interests of our clients and the publics they serve.
The Bottom Line —Our Communities and Grandkids. There
are even more fundamental reasons that companies such as HDR, government
agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency, and organizations
such as AwwaRF and WERF conduct research. Research conducted by previous
generations has virtually eliminated most waterborne disease in the
United States, and dramatically improved the quality of our waterways. Today's
research will help assure that our children and their children will enjoy the health
and environment that we all wish for them.
Bruce Willey, P. E., is HDR's national director of professional services for water. He can be
reached in HDR's San Diego office at (858) 712 -8306 or bruce.willey @hdrinc.com.
HDR EXPANDS, RELOCATES WATER RESEARCH FACILITY
HDR has relocated its water research laboratory and shop to a new facility at
2807152° "Avenue in Redmond, Wash.
The new facility has 1,000 square feet of "wet lab" space used for water and
wastewater analysis and materials and forensics evaluations. it has an addi-
tional 1,000 square feetfor fabrication of testing and pilot treatment units. Pilot
testing is a critical aspect to the application of new technologies, as it allows for
project- specific modifications enhancing performance and reducing the expense
of modifying full -size facilities.
HDR Water Data Manager Sid Hendrickson, A.D., prepares a coagulation jar test
demonstration.
HDR's original water lab was established in 1991 as a small analytical facility
to aid with corrosion control studies. The new Applied Research and Technology
Center now offers a wide range of services related to water quality and
distribution system analysis, sampling, pilot testing and independent and
collaborative research on national water quality issues. Research clients and
partners include the Environmental Protection Agency, American Water Works
Association Research Foundation, and industrial associations such as the Plastic
Pipe Institute and Copper Development Association. The Center has provided
services to clients throughout the United States and Canada.
falONE COMPANY I Many Solutions®
PRSRT STD
U.S. POSTAGE
L
PAID
.., s; Z
OMAHA, NE
,t
PERMIT # 963
N
,C
w
U
a,
61 14
CL
FRANK AKERS
045
COIA-)R ADO WATER CONSERVATION
BOARD
1313 SHERMAN ST
o
DE1114VFR CO 80203 -2278
0
falONE COMPANY I Many Solutions®
