Joench- Clausen, CSU Alum, Receives International Water Award <br />Dr. T. Joench - Clausen, DHI Director for <br />Development and Innovation has been <br />awarded the prestigious King Hassan II Great <br />World Water Prize. The price was presented by the <br />Moroccan Prime Minister on March 16th at the <br />opening ceremony of the 4th World Water Forum <br />in Mexico City. <br />The King Hassan II Great World Water Prize was <br />established as a joint initiative of the World Water <br />Council and the Government of Morocco and is <br />awarded every third year. The award ceremony <br />of the second King Hassan II Great World <br />Water Prize was carried out during the inaugural <br />ceremony of the 4th World Water Forum, and was <br />awarded to Dr.Torkil Jonch Clausen, Director of <br />the Water and Environment Institute of Denmark <br />and Chair of the Danish Water Forum, for his <br />outstanding action to improve the integrated water <br />resource management at the global scale. He has <br />worked in the sphere of water management for 35 <br />years in more than 40 countries. <br />The general theme of the Prize is cooperation <br />and sound management in the development and <br />use of water resources, in memory of his Majesty <br />King Hassan II. With the Prize <br />comes a check of US $ 100,000, <br />which Dr. T. Joench - Clausen has <br />decided to donate to a new fund, <br />which will support 3rd world <br />women's education and training <br />within integrated water resources <br />management. Joench - Clausen <br />Dr. T. Joench - Clausen received his PhD at Colo- <br />rado State University working under Hubert <br />Morel - Seytoux. He returned to Denmark after <br />receiving his PhD and worked with the Danish <br />Hydraulics Institute (DHI). He worked for the <br />Danish agency for international development and <br />spent several years in Bangladesh. He served as <br />Director of the Danish Water Quality Institute <br />before taking on a major leadership /organiza- <br />tional role in the World Water Council's Technical <br />Advisory Committee. <br />Further information is available at: http: / /www. <br />worldwatercouncil . org. <br />Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program in Water Research <br />at Colorado State University <br />Summer 2006 <br />Fifteen select undergraduate students will undertake individual research projects in water research, under the supervi- <br />sion of a CSU faculty member, over the course of 8 weeks. Participation includes weekly workshops, seminars, field <br />excursions, and discussion on water research topics. Students will present results at the end of program symposium. <br />REU students will receive stipend of $3,000 for participation. Housing will also be provided. <br />Eligibility Requirements <br />• At least a junior standing in appropriate major at time of application with good academic standing <br />• Must have at least one semester left prior to graduation as of June 1, 2006 <br />* Complete and submit online application form with a copy of transcripts and two letters of reference <br />* One to two page essay describing student's interest in water research <br />For more information or to apply online go to: http: //WaterREU.colostate.edu/ <br />
