populations exist. Biologists are now compiling this research, and assisting in the
development of river flow management plans that will be conducive to the continued
recovery of the species. According to research, river development (i.e. irrigation ditches,
river channelization and the construction of dams) is the primary culprit that has placed
this species in jeopardy. Also, the untimely release of water from hydroelectric power
facilities has often flooded sandbars, thus destroying nesting sites.
The research has also indicated that terrestrial predators have a significant
negative impact on nests. Predation reduction plans, such as surrounding a nesting area
with an electric fence, have been implemented in a number of areas; but the results from
these efforts have yet to be evaluated.
