ON THE ROAD -AND RIVER -AGAIN
he Colorado Foundation for Water Education will host the second annual
professional development river tour of the Yampa and White rivers, June
22 -24.
Last year, more than 90 water professionals, historians and legislators, among
others, spent four intense days learning about the Upper Colorado River. The group
capped the adventure
with a 10 -mile raft
trip on the river near
Glenwood Springs.
Local and regional
experts join the tour
to discuss the latest
issues in regional water
management. Time is
built in for networking
with new colleagues.
Tour registration costs
include transportation,
lodging, meals, activities
and background
materials.
EARLY REGISTRATION — BEFORE JUNE 3 LATE REGISTRATION — AFTER JUNE 3
CFWE MEMBERS
$425 single — $325 double occupancy
NON — MEMBERS
$475 single — $375 double occupancy
$550 single or double occupancy
For registrations forms, call the CFWE
offices at (303)377 -4433 or download
a printable form at www.cfwe.org
YAMPA AND WHITE RIVER BASIN
TOUR SITES AND TOPICS
(subject to change)
DAY ONE: JUNE 22
• River restoration on the Lower Elk River
• Lunch at a local ranch, agricultural flood
irrigation
• Steamboat Springs Whitewater Park
• Stagecoach Reservoir Hydroelectric
Facility
DAY TWO: JUNE 23
• Globally rare riparian forest at the Nature
Conservancy's Carpenter Ranch
• Elkhead Reservoir expansion and
endangered fish issues
• Rafting trip through Juniper Canyon on
the Yampa River
• Local history of the Meeker Valley
DAY THREE: JUNE 24
• Oil and gas issues in the Piceance
Basin: tour a drill rig
• Kenney Reservoir and water quality
issues in the White River
• Visit Dinosaur National Monument
Green River /Flaming Gorge Reservoir
operations
For a detailed itinerary see the foundation's
Web site at www.cfwe.org
New guide chronicles water heritage
ix historians and scholars weave
the story of Colorado's water
heritage in the latest of Colorado
Foundation for Water Education's Citizen
Guide series. The writers focus on water,
community and how it shapes the state's
culture, history and identity.
The authors address topics such
as reservoirs at Mesa Verde, the first
irrigation ditches in Colorado, and the
politicians behind much of Colorado's
water development in the last century.
Among them:
► Ken and Ruth Wright, co- founders of
the Wright Paleohydrological Institute,
who write about Mesa Verde's ancient
pueblo reservoirs;
► Gregory A. Hicks and Devon G.
Pena, Colorado's acequias, or Hispanic
irrigation communities; and
► Dick Stenzel, currently a South Platte
River Basin adviser for the Statewide
Water Supply Initiative, on Union
Colony, the first successful communal
farming endeavor.
Copies of the guide are $8 each or
$6 if the order is for 10 or more. To
purchase, visit the foundations' Web site
at www.cfwe.org or contact CFWE at
(303) 377 -4433.
APRIL 2005 WATERNEWS
