DIRECTORS <br />RETIREMENTS /RE- APPOINTMENTS <br />Outgoing director: We've been leaders <br />RESPECTED GREELEY WATER ATTORNEY BILL <br />BOHLENDER STEPPED DOWN FROM THE DISTRICT <br />BOARD AFTER NINE TERMS. <br />"I enjoyed all 36 years," <br />Bohlender said. <br />When he was first appointed <br />in 1968, John Love was <br />Colorado's governor and Hubert <br />Humphrey and Richard Nixon <br />were battling for the pressidency. <br />Bohlender chose not to seek <br />reappointment after 36 years, <br />including seven as District Board <br />president. A native Coloradan, <br />Bohlender grew up on a farm in <br />Weld County and never forgot <br />his agricultural roots. He served <br />as legal counsel to the city of <br />s <br />Greeley, the Greeley Water , <br />Board and numerous ditch and - <br />irrigation companies. <br />He's served with some of the <br />District's legends: W.D. Farr, Ben <br />Nix, Gordon Dykeman, Sam ;. <br />Telep, Ev Long, Ray Joyce, Wes :. - . - • - <br />Gerk and John Caneva, among <br />others. <br />"I've got mixed emotions on the growth, but we [the <br />District] managed the Colorado -Big Thompson Project pretty <br />well in trying to meet demands. The District and Subdistrict <br />have been leaders in preserving ag." <br />Board members represent portions of <br />eight northeastern Colorado counties that <br />comprise the District: Weld, Latimer, <br />Boulder, Logan, Sedgwick, Washington, <br />Morgan and Broomfield. <br />NCWCD is a public agency created in <br />1937 to contract with the U.S. government <br />to build the Colorado -Big Thompson <br />Project. The District serves approimately <br />750,000 people who live, work and farm <br />within its boundaries. <br />In any given year, three board seats are <br />up for appointment. Directors are chosen <br />by the chief district court judges in each <br />county. <br />Bohlender says in the next 10 years, <br />the District faces two issues of critical <br />importance. <br />"How will we protect agriculture? <br />oplegate _ How will we get the East and West slopes <br />resolution. tmed together ?" <br />ie Board. Reflecting on his nine terms as a Board <br />member and seven years as NCWCD <br />president, Bohlender said, "Northern has always been a catalyst <br />to get things done. That's good." <br />Magnuson named to Board; Brown, Kugeler re- appointed <br />W I d County native Don <br />Magnuson was appointed <br />to the NCWCD Board in <br />September, succeeding Bill Bohlender <br />who retired after 36 years of service. Two <br />other Board members, Bill Brown and <br />Hank Kugeler, were reappointed to the <br />12- member board. <br />Magnuson has devoted the bulk of <br />his career to water resource development <br />and management. He is superintendent <br />for the New Cache La Poudre Irrigating <br />and the Cache La Poudre Reservoir <br />companies. He has served on the boards <br />of directors for the Colorado Water <br />Congress, Groundwater Appropriators <br />of the South Platte Basin and the Ditch <br />and Reservoir Company Alliance. <br />Don Magnuson <br />Bill Brown Hank Kugeler <br />Magnuson, Kugeler and Brown each <br />began their four -year terms Oct. 8. <br />Brown and Kugeler represent Boulder <br />and Latimer counties, respectively. <br />Magnuson represents Weld County. <br />Brown, a Fort Collins attorney, was <br />first appointed to the Board in 1992. <br />This will be his fourth term.
