Teaching the Poetry of Rivers
In early 2004, the Colorado Foundation for Water Education received a grant
from the Colorado Endowment for the Humanities to develop an online course
for K -12 teachers called "Teaching the Poetry of Rivers."
This project is a literacy venture supporting the nationally- renowned Riv-
[er of Words poetry contest. At the state level, the Colorado Center for the
(CCB) sponsors the Colorado River of Words Poetry Contest, which
the interdisciplinary study of watersheds and poetry.
An interactive online course platform provides K -12 teachers with re-
sources and lesson plans combining humanities instruction (critical thinking,
comparative literature), understanding of water resources, and advancement of
literacy through creation of original poetry. Online learning is the future of profes-
sional development, and is a highly effective, low -cost way to reach busy teachers.
Currently over 40 teachers are participating in beta - testing the online programs.
"Tnb W'i tiny Q eve, kt is not llie'Y A we'a,ise, in it5fA.
-T' i is I yMrIMA rn the, ASA to I' ue, Swse' o the, WoN Wou.gh
u.n,rStAnin eu`ltuY, nr r,SSQrv."
—ul<a 3Qr►d TruSt,
COLORADO FOUNDATION FOR WATER EDUCATION
