The Colorado Watershed Protection Fund watershed news The Colorado Watershed Protection Fund is a part of the Colorado Checkoff Program, where tax payers can donate a portion of their state tax refund to provide vital support to local watershed protection groups throughout Colorado. The funds are distributed to watershed groups that work to safeguard Colorado's limited but essential water resources through a competitive grant program. Since the CWPF was added to the checkoff in 2002, it has raised almost $300,000 to help local watershed protection groups restore and protect our rivers, streams and lands within Colorado. This year, the CWPF required renewal in the state legislature. As sponsors of the renewal bill, Representative Kathleen Curry and Senator Jim Isgar were instrumental in that renewal, along with many of CWA's other partners. Projects funded by the CWPF include the Gunnison River Rehabilitation (by the North Fork River Improvement Association), the Hayman Fire Rehabilitation (by the Coalition for the Upper South Platte), the Windy Gulch Improvement Project (by the Willow Creek Reclamation Committee) and many, many more. The next round of grant applications will be accepted in January 2006.
