local watershed reports
o
M
SAN JUAN
A L L! A N C E
Animas River Nutrients
This will be a third year for our
synoptic sampling of the Animas River
for nutrients in both Colorado and
New Mexico. We are working with
the larger stakeholders in the basin
to continue the sampling and to add
two new sites in the upper basin. We
are working with the Public Service
Company to get some sampling done
at three other sites as a part of their
relicensing of the Tacoma Power Plant.
In addition, we have funding from the
Bureau of Reclamation and assistance
from the Colorado Division of Wildlife
to sample 10 of our sites each month
for a year.
Animas Watershed Plan
One outgrowth of our Animas
nutrients work is a move to get the
stakeholders in that effort to work to
create a watershed plan for the Animas
Basin. This is an ambitious undertaking,
but one that the stakeholders believe is
crucial to the long -term future of the
river. The population in this area is
growing rapidly and the development
of resort facilities and golf courses is
moving along at a rapid pace. New
developments mean new wastewater
treatment facilities, and more golf
courses will increase non -point
discharges. With scores of NPDES
permits in the basin we need to get a
handle on the condition of the river
and establish the long term working
relationships that the community
will need to protect and improve this
wonderful river. The Non Point Source
Council and the Southern Ute Indian
Tribe have given us seed money for
this effort, which will start later this
summer.
Dolores Coalition and
Dolores River Dialogue
As you will read in another article
in this report, submitted by The Dolores
River Dialogue, we are moving along
with continued participation by all
of the original stakeholders. Without
considering in -kind services, our initial
scientific report represents about a
$60,000 investment. The Dialogue
has applied for a grant from the
Watershed Protection Fund, which is
an opportunity the Colorado Watershed
Assembly created for efforts like ours.
Please read the article by John Porter.
In- stream Gravel Mining in
the Animas River
One ongoing concern on the
Animas is instream gravel mining.
In the past, four permits were issued
for the section north of Durango. We
have been actively working with the
Army Corps of Engineers to better
enforce permit requirements, and with
the assistance of some very committed
professional volunteer time we have
been able to analyze the effects of
the one permittee that has applied in
2005. Our intent is to improve the
condition of the channel and to help
adjacent landowners protect the banks
of the river in the area adjacent to the
mining.
For more information on any of
the San Juan Citizens Alliance projects
please call Chuck Wanner at 970 -259-
3583 or e -mail cwanner @frontier.net
Animas River
