At one time Piping Plovers nested on all four Great Lakes <br />beaches surrounding Michigan. Past breeding records include the <br />following counties: Alger, Delta, Emmet, Cheboygan, Charlevoix, <br />Benzie, Mackinac, Chippewa, Muskegon, Leelanau, Berrien, Monroe, <br />Macomb, Tuscola, Huron, Alcona, Presque Isle, Schoolcraft, and <br />St. Clair (Cotrille 1957, Lambert and Ratcliff 1981, Russ.ell <br />1983). Piping Plovers have not nested in Ohio since 1942. Prior <br />to that, breeding birds were found along the shore of Lake Erie <br />in Lucas, Ottawa, Cuyohoga, Erie, Lorain, Lake, and Ashtabula <br />counties (Hicks 1933, Trautman 1977, Russell 1983). Similarly, <br />nesting in Pennsylvania only occurred on Presque Isle (Erie <br />County) (Todd 1940, Genoways and Brenner 1983). Birds nested in <br />two counties (Oswego and Cayuga) along Lake Ontario in New York <br />(Bull 1974) and in Penn Yan (Yates County)(Wilcox 1959). <br />r„1f of Mexico: A review of past Christmas Bird Counts <br />(CBC's) indicated Piping Plovers used most Texas coastal beaches <br />during the winter. Further support comes from birds collected in <br />Aransas, Cameron, Nueces, San Patricio, and Matagorda counties. <br />In addition, Piping Plovers have been reported at Hagerman <br />National Wildlife Refuge (Grayson County) for more than 20 years. <br />Museum records indicated that birds wintered in the following <br />coastal Louisiana parishes: Calcasieu, Cameron, East Baton <br />Rouge, Jefferson, LaFourche, and Orleans. Tn Mississippi, Piping <br />Plovers wintered along coastal beaches in Jackson, Harrison, and <br />Hancock counties, and the Gulf Shore Islands (Burleigh 1944, <br />Gandy and Turcotte 1970).
