and incorporated into the stability computations during the process of
refining the preliminary design on the selected alternative for this project.
The same type of computational process shall be used in less detailed scope to
provide guidelines and evaluation data for the initial alternatives
presented. The geotechnical analysis shall also consider the future needs for
instrumentation or measuring devices to monitor performance after
rehabilitation.
Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) may be a viable tool for providing adequate
erosion protection to the primary, secondary and emergency spillways, and to
meet design flood requirements. Therefore, MKE shall make a field
reconnaissance of potential construction materials during the Task 2 site
visit and select one or more sources for sampling of potential RCC aggregate.
The samples shall be subjected to a battery of laboratory tests, as specified
in Section 7.2.2 of this Document, to determine their physical
characteristics. In addition, at least on 1 RCC mix shall be made and
cylinders cast for determination of. ve Atrength and freeze -thaw
durability., A
The following is a description Q c!btechnical exploration program
C
proposed for Barnes Meadow Dam.
7.2.1 General Scope of Geotechnical Investigation
Over the years, a total of 6 boreholes have been drilled through the dam and
downstream of the darn. While these holes have described the material
encountered in the embankment and foundation, only general descriptions of the
material encountered are available for review. No specific soil strength
parameters are available for use in the stability or seepage analysis. In
addition, no in -place permeability tests of the dam and foundation have been
performed. The deepest of the holes drilled previously penetrated only 42
Feet into the foundation material downstream of the dam and it cannot be
definitely determined whether the boreholes encountered a large boulder or
definitely penetrated bedrock.
- 8 -
