However, only about half of that space <br />is typically used to store water. The rest is left open to <br />prevent floods. <br />The flood - control reservoir is owned by the federal <br />government and run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. <br />The reservoir sports 11,300 acres of surface water at <br />present, making it one of the biggest lakes in the state. The <br />site also includes another 16,000 acres of land. <br />The state park design process will require lots of public <br />input, Walcher said, which is why he traveled here Monday. <br />He also asked if local officials still support the idea of <br />establishing the park at John Martin. <br />Some still hold hopes of getting the state park built at the <br />Great Plains Reservoirs near Eads.
