Our council came out pretty strong
(in the votes) that we value these relationships and will continue to value them in the future.
"It's clearly been a difficult situation for all of us for the past few months."
The intergovernmental agreement between Aurora and the conservancy district states that HR1714
should be amended to allow the Bureau of Reclamation to make long -term "if and when" storage
contracts with Aurora. HR1714 is the legislation that would authorize studies of the enlargement of
Pueblo Dam and reservoir and Sugar Loaf Dam and Turquoise reservoir.
Under the agreement, Aurora will pay the conservancy district a total of $3.5 million over 25 years: $1
million up front; $50,000 a year for 25 years; and a $10 per acre -foot surcharge for water Aurora has a
contract to store in Fry -Ark Project facilities - in no event less than 5,000 acre -feet, for a total payment
of at least $50,000 a year.
The agreement does not allow Aurora to use project water, and does not give any permanent storage to
Aurora. It forbids Aurora's use of project storage space to make possible any new transfers of water
out of the Arkansas River basin.
bids Aurora's use of project storage space to make possible any new transfers of water out of the
Arkansas River basin.
©1996 -2000 The pueblo Chieftain Online
2 of 2 10/31/013:07 PM
