PROJECT SETTING
Location and Size
The Holbrook Lake Ditch Watershed is located in northeastern Otero County in
southeastern Colorado. The watershed consists of 28,000 acres of which 16,000
acres is irrigated. The area averages 2 miles wide and 16 miles long. Cheraw,
Colorado (Pop. 265) is toward the east edge and La Junta is just south of the
watershed. Pueblo, Colorado is 40 miles west of the watershed area.
The watershed is bounded on the west by the Holbrook Canal from the point of its
diversion on the Arkansas River, south by the Arkansas River, Jackson and Reservoir
Canals, Northeast by Horse Creek and the Bent county line, and on the East by the
irrigated cropland boundary northeast of Swink. It includes the Holbrook Reservoir,
Manby Lake, Taylor Lake, and Cheraw Lake..
Topography and Drainage
The highest elevation in the watershed is the Holbrook Canal takeout with an
elevation of 4200 ft. on the west edge to 4100 ft. on the east edge of the county line.
The entire watershed area is gently sloping as it drains toward the east to Horse
Creek which outlets into the Arkansas River. John Martin Reservoir is approximately
20 miles downstream of our watershed. John Martin Reservoir is used for flood
control, recreation, and irrigation storage.
21
