(TOUR, Continued from page 3)
In the past, Frank Milenski past
board member (May 13, 1958 -
November 16, 1998) navigated our
tours and since his passing, the
District relies on the assistance of his
son, Bill Milenski of Milenski
Appraisal Service Inc. Bill is probably
only one of the few natives in
southeastern Colorado that is able to
locate each and every canal we visited
on the tour. A special thanks goes out
to Bill for his generosity in assisting
the District with the tour.
The District is proud to sponsor
these tours and enjoys bringing
together such a diverse group of
individuals. For more information you
can contact the District office
at (719) 948 -2400.
(Xeriwape, Continued from page 4)
which data is collected on the amount
of irrigation water that is applied to
the different water zones in the
garden. The frequency that watering
takes place and the plant's response to
the irrigation is also documented. The
schedule records the seasonal changes
in irrigation for each water zone, the
amount of natural precipitation and the
average high and low temperatures for
each week. The information can be
used to conserve water by illustrating
how to properly irrigate a landscape.
SECWCD is heavily dependent
on volunteer help to maintain the
garden. Pueblo County Master
Gardeners volunteer as tour guides
and assist with special planting days,
as do volunteers from the Unitarian
Universalist Church. Residents from
the El Pueblo Boys and Girls Ranch
assist with the weeding and mulching
of the garden. We are very grateful for
the help our volunteers have provided.
The garden is located at the
SECWCD building in Pueblo,
Colorado (31717 United Avenue, in
the Pueblo Airport Industrial Park).
The garden is open for public viewing
from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday
through Friday. Presentations on how
to conserve water in the landscape and
guided tours of the garden are
available by appointment, call 719 -
948 -2400 for more information.
Written by: Jean Van Pelt, Education
Program /Maintenance Coordinator
SEARCHING FOR SOLUTIONS
A SALINITY /SELENIUM SYMPOSIUM
AND WORKSHOP
Salinity and selenium problems
are increasing each year in the
waters and soils of Colorado as
well as other states in the we stern
U.S. One million tons of salt were
transported down the Arkansas
River of Colorado in 1999 and
excess selenium is causing aquatic
birds and fish to be deformed in
some waters of the Western Slope.
In an effort to stem this surge of
problems, the Colorado Chapter of
the Soil and Water Conservation
Society is presenting a Salinity/
Selenium Symposium and
Workshop - Searching for
Solutions.
The Symposium/Workshop will
feature many of the foremost
authorities on salinity and
selenium from throughout the
nation and world. Jim Rhoades,
past Director of the US Salinity
Lab in Riverside, CA and now a
private consultant, and Gary
Banuelos of the USDA Water
Management Research Lab in
Fresno, CA will discuss these
problems from an international
aspect and propose principles,
strategies, and solutions to control
the problems. Other speakers
include personnel from
universities, government agencies
and private practices throughout
the western U.S.
The Symposium/Workshop will
be held at the Red Lion Hotel
(formerly LeBaron) in Colorado
Springs on Thursday and Friday,
October 4 and 5, 2001. Sign up for
the event will begin at 8:3 0 am
with a $75 registration fee. Lunch
is included each day. Myron
Senechal, High Plains Region
Director and SWCS Vice -
President, will welcome the
participants and briefly discuss the
5
purpose and functions of the Soil
and Water Conservation Society.
The Search for Solutions program
will begin with a look at the
international problems, then move
its focus to the western U.S. The
program will then take an in -depth
look at Colorado, the individual
river basins of the Arkansas,
Colorado, Rio Grande and South
Platte, and end looking at individual
field problems during the two -day
program.
On the afternoon of Friday Oct. 5,
the workshop will move outside to
look at new methods and equipment
for rapid salinity soils mapping
including VERIS technology, the
Seymour Salt Unit, the salt sniffer
and global positioning system
options. Field and laboratory
analysis equipment will also be
shown and discussed during this
session.
Information concerning
registration can be obtained by
going to the Colorado State
University Cooperative Extension
web page for Southeast Colorado
under the Irrigation section.
Information can also be obtained by
e- mailing Mary Miller, Chapter
President - Elect, Mary.miller @co.
usda.gov; Jim Valliant, Chapter
President, valiant @coop.ext.
colostate.edu; or, Pat Clifford,
otero @coop.ext.colostate.edu.
Information will also be available
through local NRCS and CSU
Extension offices.
UPDATE
SECWCD General
Manager, Steve
Arveschoug's
new cell number is
250 -5842.
