L9 <br />Fort Lyon transferred for use as state prison http:// www .chieftain.com/print/saturday /news /articles /ni2.htm <br />constructed on the property are a way to "keep the fort going in some way." <br />Stuart Collyer, director of the Southern Colorado VA health care system, said he is pleased that the <br />Kit Carson chapel will be renovated by the prisoners. Carson, the famous scout and Army general, <br />lived near Las Animas and died at Fort Lyon in 1868. <br />"We're delighted that this gem will remain accessible for years to come," he said. <br />State Rep. Ken Kester, R -Las Animas, sponsored the legislation for the transfer, along with Sen. Mark <br />Hillman, R- Burlington. The bill was approved by the state Legislature in April. <br />Bill Long, a businessman active in the Bent County Development Foundation, said then that the new <br />prison may employ as many as 285 full -time staffers when it reaches full capacity in June 2002. <br />Kester reviewed the history of the fort.
