The Seven Principles of Xeriscape
I Pi nn :inr!
Draw your landscape plan to scale on a large sheet of paper. Be sure to note problem areas, the function
of each area and group plants according to water requirements and sun exposure. The best plan is a well
thought out plan.
2. Improve the Soil
Good soil is basic to a successful landscape. Improving the soil with organic amendments will increase
the water - holding capacity and will create deeper root development.
3. Limit Turf to Practical Sizes or Select Alternatives to Turf
Limiting the size of lawn areas can reduce water usage and yard maintenance. Consider using low water
grasses, such as buffalograss, grama or fescue grasses. In areas where turf is difficult to establish or to
maintain, utilize low water ground covers or plants.
4. Water Efficiently With Proper Irrigation Methods
The best way to water is deeply and infrequently, enabling plants to develop deep root systems. The
best time to water is between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. Low - pressure, low angle sprinklers are best to irrigate
turf. Drip, micro -spray or bubbler emitters are most efficient for watering trees, shrubs, flowers and
groundcovers. When using an automatic sprinkler system, adjust the controller to meet seasonal needs
and weather conditions. Even small changes in your watering schedule and habits can reduce water
consumption.
5. Select Appropriate Plants and Group According to Similar Water Needs
By focusing on low water plants you will be amazed at the variety of beautiful plants that thrive in our
semi -arid climate. Grouping plants according to water and sunlight requirements ensures that they will
flourish in an optimal environment. Plan your landscape to accommodate three watering zones: high,
moderate, and low water zones.
6. Use Mulches
Mulches cover the soil and are used to conserve soil moisture, reduce weed growth, cool the root zone,
slow erosion, and create a neat appearance. Mulches should be applied in a layer three to four inches
deep. Mulches in a Xeriscape are most effective when the landscape is new, with large spaces between
small plants.
7. Proper Maintenance
Xeriscape gardening can reduce maintenance, but no landscape is maintenance free. The regular
and timely performance of certain chores is essential. Proper planting, pruning, mulching, fertilizing,
weeding, and irrigation can ensure plant health and beauty.
•22•
