Liquid assetFriday, August 13, 2004 3:05:50 PM
Close This Window
By SCOTT ALDIS- WILSON
scottaw @gctelegram.com
Posted on Friday, August 13, 2004 3:05:50 PM
As one of the first presenters at Thursday's summer conference of the Kansas Water Congress,
Colorado Water Congress Executive Director Dick $avy began with words of wisdom from
Mark Twain- "Whiskey is for drinking. Water is for fighting over."
But while the quote sums up the sometimes tumultuous nature of water supplies in the Midwest,
there were no raised voices or punches thrown over the next seven hours in Garden City Community
College's Beth Tedrow Student Center.
In fact, KWC executive director Dave Brenn said he was keeping track of the number of agreements
and disagreements among panelists in four panels of six to 10.
"Guess what? There's more commonality than disparity," he said.
There was certainly room for disagreement with an attendance of more than 120 and panelists
working in government, industry and farming all looking at subjects like management of the
dwindling Ogallala Aquifer and transition of irrigated land to dryland farming.
http://www.gctelegram.com/news/2004/august/13/storyl.html 8/16/2004
