"But there still is the possibility they won't, or they
Might pay only 75 percentf tha praised value."
Funding also still needs to be secured in the state water plan, Stover said. The Upper and
Lower Arkansas Basin Advisory Committees will meet in July and August - making a final
recommendation to the Kansas Water Authority on the purchase.
The water authority will decide if funding should be allocated in the water plan, Stover said.
Falk said her board was unanimous in its decision to look for a way to acquire the ranch and
would continue to pursue the purchase even if the state backs out of it.
"Whether the state gets it or not, we are interested in partnering, and we are looking to
purchase as well," she said.
Less than 2 percent of Kansas is made up of state -owned lands, making the possible state
purchase one of the biggest land deals since Cheyenne Bottoms nearly 50 years ago.
Upcoming meetings
* The Lower Arkansas Basin Advisory Committee will meet at 9 a.m. at the Santa Fe Depot
in Kingman.
* The Upper Arkansas Basin Advisory Committee Meeting is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Aug. 2
at the King Center in Jetmore.
* The Kansas Water Authority will meet on Aug. 25 -26 at Newton.
Copyright 2004 The Hutchinson News
http: / /www.hutchnews.com /past /07 -09- 2004 /region/region2.html 8/23/2004
