We met our goals related to wetlands <br />and wildlife in fiscal year 2003 (Table 4.) <br />The 2002 Farm Bill authorized an <br />increased level of support for these <br />activities. <br />Funding for Goal 2 <br />Figure 8 shows the relative contribution <br />each NRCS program makes to the funds <br />expended on Goal activities. Protecting <br />water and air quality requires intensive <br />conservation efforts. Many of the needed <br />practices are expensive to adopt and <br />maintain. The availability of financial <br />assistance is an important part of the pub- <br />lic portfolio for helping producers prac- <br />tice good stewardship. <br />See "FY 2003 Performance Measures" for addi- <br />tional data and maps relating to the perform- <br />ance measures that support this strategic goal. <br />Table 4.
