CHILDREN'S WATER FESTIVAL 2003 <br />On Thursday, May 8, 2003 ap- <br />proximately 1,900 students from <br />School Districts 60, 70 and <br />Pueblo's private schools as- <br />cended on the University of <br />Southern Colorado to attend the <br />fifth annual Children's Water <br />Festival held in Pueblo. <br />This years Water Festival was <br />sponsored by the Southeastern <br />Colorado Water Conservancy <br />District, Board of Water Works <br />of Pueblo, University of Southern <br />Colorado, Bureau of Reclama- <br />tion, St. Charles Mesa Water Dis- <br />trict and the Pueblo West Metro- <br />politan District. <br />The Children's Water Festival is <br />the West, as one of th <br />most effective ways ti <br />inform children and <br />adults about the impo <br />tance of water in their <br />everyday lives. <br />Classes of children ar <br />their teachers circulat <br />through the festival o: <br />prearranged schedule <br />They visited hands -ot <br />demonstrations, plus <br />dozens of classroom <br />presentations, all rely <br />to water and its many <br />uses. A knowledge <br />bowl -type game calle <br />Water Wizards let chi <br />drer <br />MAE, fron <br />diffi <br />V VI aN � <br />Phil Reynolds (aka Judge Reynolds for the day), CFO, <br />SECWCD, discusses water court with the children. <br />a recently developed medium for <br />interactive education in the teach- <br />ing of water conservation, water <br />cycle, ground water, non -point <br />source pollution, irrigation, agri- <br />cultural and other important wa- <br />ter related issues. <br />The first festivals were developed <br />in Nebraska in the late 1980's. <br />Since then they have swept <br />across the country, particularly in <br />ent <br />clas <br />schools match <br />their water <br />knowledge <br />against each <br />other. Other <br />events in- <br />cluded music, <br />art, aerobic <br />exercise, and <br />magic shows <br />that helped <br />highlight the <br />many wonderful ways that wa- <br />ter makes life possible. <br />Volunteers from the sponsoring <br />entities, the President's Leader- <br />ship Program from USC, and <br />students from Pueblo County <br />High School's Future Farmers <br />of America helped to keep the <br />classes on schedule and direct <br />them to the correct classes. <br />3 <br />The Sixth Annual Children's <br />Water Festival has been sched- <br />uled for May 6, 2004. There is <br />always a need for more present- <br />ers. The more presenters there <br />are, the more children that will <br />be able to attend.
