BOREAL TOAD CONSERVATION STRATEGY
Purpose: To develop guidelines /strategies to manage boreal toad habitat on
Federal land.
Background:
- ESA listing of toads
- Colorado BT Recovery Plan
- Need to identify BMP (Best Management Practices) to protect /maintain
habitat
Stratecry Scope:
Plan covers:
• BT Habitat within historic range (is CO, S.E. WY, N. NM)
- Show map w/ Range & Ownership - (Brenda /Steve)
• All Federal Lands within historic range
(FS, BLM, NPS, F &WS, BIA ?, BOR ?, DOD? - Jeff will contact for
involvement)
• Federal Actions:
- Grazing
- Timber
- Rec Use
Ski Areas
Campgrounds
Trails
- Water Diversions
- Fisheries Habitat work
- Mining
- Land Exchanges& Acquisitions
• Time frame: to achieve & maintain recovery
Federal Land Managers Need:
Objectives:
I. Data Base Management
A. Occurrence /Distribution
1) Existing Information (needs to be organized by Rec team ?)
Known localities
Current observations
Areas Surveyed recently
2) Needed information (Therese will bring to BTRT)
Intensive surveys where non - breeding toads observed
New surveys in known range (places where no one has looked)
3) Good data base Management (GIS)
(Brenda will check on capability)
2. Identify desired habitat conditions (Steve)
- Breeding
Shallow - open water
- Adult habitat
Riparian - wetlands
Willow- carex, wet meadows
- Need to identify habitat
Requirements - minimum acceptable conditions
