b. Colorado Squawfish <br />The Colorado squawfish is the largest in size of the four existing species. Fossils of the <br />mid - Pliocene epoch (about 6 million years ago) indicate that the genus had adopted riverine <br />forms that are similar to modem forms. Historically the Colorado squawfish occurred <br />throughout the Colorado River Basin. <br />USFWS is designating 6 reaches of the Colorado River system (Figure I -2 -2) as critical <br />habitat for the Colorado squawfish. In the Upper Basin, critical habitat includes areas of the <br />Green, Yampa, Colorado, White, Gunnison, and San Juan rivers. Of the historical range of <br />the Colorado squawfish, 29 percent is being designated as critical habitat. <br />Figure I -2 -2.
