W
ES /CR:Critical Habitat
Mail Stop 65115
APR 2 0 1154
Memorandum
To: Cooperating Agencies (See Attached Distribution List)
From: Assistant Regional Director, Ecological Services, Region 6
Subject: Critical Habitat Designation for Colorado River Endangered Fishes
The Final Rule designating critical habitat for Colorado squawfish
(Ptychocheilus Iucius), razorback sucker (Xyranchen texanus), humpback chub
(Gila cypha), and bonytail chub (Gila elegans) was published in the Federal
Register on Monday, March 21, 1994, (vol. 59 #54). The effective date of the
above - referenced Final Rule will be April 20, 1994. The Fish & Wildlife
Service (Service) recommends that your agency review its activities within the
Colorado River drainage (past, present, and future) to ensure compliance with
requirements of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (as amended) as they relate
to critical habitat. Copies of the Federal Register are attached for your
convenience. Please distribute this information throughout your organization.
The Service is currently reviewing its files to identify all projects which
have undergone formal section 7 consultation since the listing of the
endangered Colorado River fishes. This list of projects will be provided to
you to assist in your determination as to which projects may require
reinitiation of section 7 consultation to address the listing of critical
habitat or other new information that was not previously considered. The
section 7 regulations (50 CFR Part 402.16) describe the requirements for
reinitiation of formal section 7 consultation.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and interest in preserving
endangered species. If you have questions, please contact the individual
listed on Attachment 3.
Attachments (3)
