r <br />6. Storage facilities for materials capable of causing water pollution, <br />if accidentally discharged, shall be located so as to prevent any <br />spillage into waters, or channels leading into water, that would <br />result in substantial harm to fish and wildlife or to human water <br />supplies. <br />7. The Grantee shall carry on all operations in a workmanlike manner, <br />-- having due regard, for .the safety of employees; and shall safeguard with <br />fences, barriers, fills, covers, or other effective devices, pits, cuts, <br />and other excavations which otherwise would unduly imperil life, safety, <br />or "'property of other persons. <br />8. The Grantee shall transport, store, handle and use explosives as <br />follows: <br />a. Only electronic detonators shall be used for blasting. <br />b. In the use of explosives, the Grantee shall exercise the utmost <br />care not to endanger life or property and shall be responsible for <br />any and all damages resulting from the use of explosives and shall <br />adopt precautions that will prevent damage to surrounding objects. <br />The Grantee shall furnish and erect special signs to warn the <br />public of its blasting operations. Such signs shall be placed and <br />It_ maintained so as to be clearly evident to the public during all <br />critical periods of the blasting operations, and shall include a <br />warning statement to have radio transmitters turned off. <br />c. All explosives shall be stored in a secure manner, in c=pliance <br />with local laws and ordinances, and all such storage places shall <br />be marked "DANGEROUS - EXPLOSIVES." Where no local laws or <br />ordinances apply, storage shall be provided satisfactory to the <br />Forest Officer in charge, and in general, not closer than 1,000 feet <br />from the road or fran any building or camping area. <br />d. When using explosives, the Grantee shall adopt precautions which <br />will prevent damage to landscape features and other surrounding <br />objects. When directed by the Forest Officer in charge, trees <br />within an area designated to be cleared shall be left as a protec- <br />tive screen for surrounding vegetation during blasting operations. <br />Trees so left shall be removed and disposed of after blasting <br />has been completed. When necessary, and at any point of <br />special danger, the Grantee shall use suitable mats or some <br />other approved method to smother blasts. <br />9. If, during excavation work, items of substantial archeological or <br />paleontological value are discovered, or a known deposit of such <br />items is disturbed, the Grantee will cease excavation in the area <br />so affected. He will then notify the Forest Service and will not <br />resume excavation until written approval is given. <br />10. The Grantee will ensure slope stabilization and prevent soil loss <br />throughout the authorized area by carrying out the following <br />erosion control provisions: <br />a. Topsoil shall be stripped from construction areas and be <br />deposited in storage piles apart fran other excavated material. <br />After construction has been completed, and the resulting dis- <br />turbed areas have been reshaped and smoothed as required, the <br />stored topsoil shall be evenly spread over exposed topsoil, to <br />the extent that may be practicable, and shall be revegetated. <br />
