-NRCS Colorado 2012 EQIP Signup and Application Information
Page 2 of 4
The above Colorado Watershed Map shows the following 10 watershed areas in Colorado:
North Platte White Yampa Rivers Watershed
Colorado River Watershed
Gunnison - Dolores -River Watershed
San Juan River Basin Watershed
Rio Grande River Watershed
2012 Salinity Initiative
Upper South Platte River Watershed
Upper Arkansas River Watershed
Lower South Platte River Watershed
Republican River Watershed
Lower Arkansas River Watershed
The Colorado River Basin Salinity Control Act, established in 1974, provided the authorization for numerous
salinity control projects in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Nevada as well as planning studies in Arizona,
California, New Mexico and Wyoming. High levels of salinity in water can reduce crop yields, limit the choice
of crops that can be grown, and at higher concentrations over long periods, it can kill trees and make the
land unsuitable for agricultural purposes.
The project areas established in Colorado are the Grand Valley, Lower Gunnison, McElmo, Mancos Valley, Silt,
Debeque and Whitewater. Through strong partnerships between NRCS, private landowners, Bureau of
Reclamation, Colorado's State Conservation Board, and numerous local Conservation Districts, financial and
technical assistance funds have been used to install irrigation improvements like installation of pipelines,
more efficient irrigation systems and lining of ditches and small laterals.
The annual reports below for each project demonstrate the partnerships and NRCS progress to date in the
project areas.
Salinity Initiative Information
http: / /www.co.nres.usda.gov /programs /eqip /eqip.html 5/14/2012
